Medical Care Continues In The Clinic In Blanchard
By Gale Hull
Feb 5, 2006, 17:20

We have seen it at it’s best in our program in Haiti during the last year of political instability and violence. Our clinic which was almost finished was getting ready to have windows, doors, electricity and water installed, then we had to stop. It was to risky to continue building and impossible to bring in the supplies to finish. I went in June 2005 to tie up loose ends; to decide how to run the programs when we couldn’t come with teams.. Benite and Chantel, our two Haitian nurses decided that they would continue running the clinic with sheets for the door and windows, three days a week. They would borrow the table, chairs and benches from the neighbors. They would continue the vitamin program and monitor all of the people with blood pressure problems, diabetes and treat other common ailments. They monitored those who have TB and followed up on all the pregnant women. I left a lot of supplies. Money for medicine is sent monthly to reimburse money spent through our medical insurance program. They were deicated to the work of the clinic and to transforming this community into a healthy one.

Here is the medical report for the Oct, Nov and Dec 2005 ( exactly as written) by Benite:

I would like to make you know what is going on during the 3 months. We have received about 80 persons in the clinic every month. Each month a few more come. Three new children are born from Mrs. Genois, Mrs. Prince and Anama. All of them are well. Families in Blanchard are really want to see you, they send a high salutation, even when their condition of living is so hard, they still believe that PID will never forget them. “

She then sent the list of medicines they distrubuted. Which included:
multivitamins, Ibuprophen, Amoxicillin, stomach medications, antifungal creams, bronchial medication, Bactrim, diabetic medication and blood pressure medicine and many others which I can’t translate.

No one except those who have lived in Haiti or have gone can appreciate what these brave nurses are doing. The vitamins have had a very positive effect. Before the vitamin therapy mothers and babies died in child birth( we lost 3 mothers and four babies before the vitamins), mostly because of complications due to anemia. Two of the mothers that delivered in this report were extremely high risks and yet they and their babies survived.

The situation is so dangerous many of these people would not venture out to get their medications. Benite and Chantel monitor, go buy and bring the medication in for continuous treatment.

clinic buidling stage 3

We hope to be able to return soon but until then we are so grateful to have a building to work in and a staff that is so committed.
